Unlocking Potential with LEGO® Serious Play

I recently stepped away from the day-to-day for a much-needed pause—what unfolded was an opportunity for reflection, not just on my own growth, but on how I can continue to evolve and deepen my coaching practice. It reminded me of how important it is for coaches to continually learn, explore, and grow. Coaching isn’t a static skill; it’s an evolving practice that benefits from fresh tools and perspectives—and one such tool I recently had the pleasure of exploring was LEGO® Serious Play.

Yes LEGO. The same colourful bricks that once littered our childhood floors (and felt like swords to the foot!) are now helping adults unlock powerful insights. LEGO® Serious Play is more than just play—it’s a dynamic tool for creativity, problem-solving, and personal development. The hands-on, visual nature of the process taps into a different kind of thinking. This creative freedom opens up new pathways for insight and reflection, offering a fresh lens through which to explore challenges and opportunities.
During the session, we were asked two deceptively simple questions: “What is the challenge you're facing?” and “How does it feel?” What followed was surprising. Each model we built with bricks became a unique story—a reflection of a mindset, a value, or a belief. In the act of building, we gave shape to thoughts and feelings that are often difficult to articulate with words alone.
Storytelling
After building our models, each participant was invited to share the story behind their creation. What emerged wasn’t just a series of answers—it was a rich narrative full of emotions, insights, and connections. Storytelling through creativity is, as it turns out, a powerful tool for understanding ourselves and others, making complex thoughts and emotions more accessible.
As coaches, we know that the stories we tell ourselves shape our behaviours and decisions. By using tools like LEGO® Serious Play to externalise and visualise these stories, we can unlock new layers of understanding and awareness—helping clients move from stuck to empowered.
Circle of Community
One of the true joys of this learning experience was connecting with like-minded individuals—coaches, facilitators, and curious professionals—who share a passion for creative, client-centred approaches. The richness of perspectives, shared stories, and mutual encouragement made the day all the more meaningful. It was a reminder that coaching isn’t just a one-to-one practice—it thrives in community. A circle of continuous learners, all committed to growing themselves while helping others grow.
And perhaps the biggest takeaway? Learning is a journey, not a destination. I walked away energised by the creativity of the method, the inspiration of peers, and the potential to weave this into my practice—helping clients unlock insights in bold new ways.
Because sometimes, it’s through creativity that we begin to truly see.
